What We’re Wearing…for the Party Season!

It’s always an exciting time of year, with plenty of party invites coming your way fresh for the festive season.  Here’s a sneaky peak at what we’re wearing at boohoo HQ!

Ria: Most of the time I go out straight from work; I tend to stay casual with simple day to night looks. Wearing a tunic top with leather skinnies is smart enough for the office but add a pair of glam glitter heels and I’m ready to party. I love the subtle detail of this tunic with its leather buckle fasten. The box bag is the perfect accessory this season its versatility takes it from 40’S siren to tough glamour with its pony hair finish adding a touch of luxe.

Buckle fasten – Leather buckle adds tough edge to simple tunic.

Box Bag – Leopard print accessories are key this season.

Glitter Shoes – From the catwalk to the high street; sparle like a princess.

Leather trousers – Upgrade your jeans for a casual take on party wear

Necklace – Simple long drop gold necklace.

Jessica: In the day I tend to be a bit of a rock chick, so when it comes to night time I let my girlie side come out.  I love sequins, lurex and chunky jewellery, so at the moment I’m really into Aztec inspired pieces like the cuff I’m wearing here.  Over sized clutches are my star accessory at the moment and this one with it’s tassel, contrasting textures and gold detail combine three trends in one!  This dress is the perfect party dress as it’s sparkly and sexy with the one shoulder and bodycon silhouette.  It’s also really comfy – which is a major bonus when dancing!

Lurex A comfy yet glam fabric to add some sparkle to your evening attire.

Oversized Clutch – A practical accessory which makes a style statement and fits all your evening essentials in!

Chunky Aztec Jewellery – A bit of a Midas touch, with some gold chunky jewellery.

Michelle Williams is Picture Perfect as Marilyn Monroe

Michelle Williams captures the essence of Hollywood’s favourite style icon, Marilyn Monroe, perfectly in her much talked about new film, My Week With Marilyn.

Jill Taylor, the costume designer for the star studded cast, had only six weeks to source Michelle’s glamorous array of costumes. Set in the summer of 1956, Michelle wears a variety of beautifully selected, vintage-inspired outfits from that iconic combination of a mac and headscarf, to tweed trousers teamed with cashmere knits to luxurious dresses cinched in at the waist. All of this topped off with a head of platinum blonde curls and sultry red lips makes Michelle Williams a very chic and convincing Marilyn.

We can’t wait to see the film! Who is your style icon?

Oh Na Na, What’s Her Name?

A (very privileged) select few at boohoo HQ were picked at random yesterday to go and see the one and only, queen of loud, Rihanna!  Of course, not only were we very excited at the prospect of basking in pop greatness, but as one of our generation’s style icons, we were eager to see what RiRi was going to wear….and let us tell you, she did not disappoint!

During her two hour set, Rihanna pulled nine outfit changes out the bag, scaling over six of the hottest trends around.  For her opening number she donned a metallic mini mac; a trend that was repeated once more in the show with a modern metallic take on a 1940s flapper dress.

Now if we were one of the hottest women in the world, we wouldn’t mind baring some flesh either, but Rihanna is hardly the shy and retiring type!  Hot pants were a continuous theme throughout her performance, and she showed off her curves in embellished and denim versions,  teamed with sequinned and bejewelled bra tops, which were reminiscent of a fifties pin up girl….but a less modest one to say the least!

Being the Barbados beauty she is, Rihanna is definitely a fan of colour and bold prints.  Her colour block neon heeled boots, and a floor length yellow dress lit up the stage, and finale piece, boasting exaggerated Breton stripes all blew us away.  But our favourite outfit by far was her androgynous tuxedo complete with Fred Astaire style cane.  What a rude girl, what a night!

American Music Awards 2011: A Night of Amazing Party Dresses

Last night saw the return of the annual American Music Awards, but of course it wasn’t all about the musical accolades, oh no!   As we got to the office this morning, we couldn’t help but pour over the pictures of the good, the glamorous… and those who should sack their stylist!   Let’s face it where there’s a celebrity crowd, there’s always a style scandal or two!

Kelly Clarkson looked classy and curvaceous during her performance of current chart hit ‘Mr. Know It All’, in her 1950s, floor length sequinned tribute to Jessica Rabbit.  Following in her sequinned, sister’s footsteps was three time award winner of the night Taylor Swift, who wore a beautiful, old Hollywood inspired golden gown.  But while some stars shone, others….ahem Nikki Minaj…opted for a lacey basque complete with pea green full skirt, which subsequently clashed with her bubblegum pink barnet.   Nevertheless, it didn’t stop Ms. Minaj winning not one, but two awards for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album for Pink Friday – so I guess we can forgive her for her style sin.

Yes Nikki…we were shocked too

Another party dress trend we spotted was amongst the metallic mamas of the evening!  Mr. Beiber’s beau Selena looked stunning in a pearl, satin, show stopper, as did the gorgeous Heidi Klum who opted for a cut- out detail design.  The amazingly talented Jennifer Hudson also opted for silver, however her usually faultless style had a chink in her metallic armour came with her choice of ruched mini dress.  And while we enjoyed Katy Perry’s performance on stage, off stage she pulled off nothing short of a fashion faux-pas with her Japanese printed, bandeau blooper.  Sorry Katy…you may be first female pop singer to have five No. 1 singles off one album,  but there was just no excuse.

Hanging on the Telephone.

Ever heard of Lady GaGa? Us neither, but the platinum icon has launched yet ANOTHER trend…retro handsets. GaGa, a fan of all things off-the-wall, has traded in her typical handset for a corded receiver, proving it’s good to talk.

This isn’t an accessory for wallflowers – using the gadget will get you noticed, but in our opinion, it’s always good to cause a stir and give people something to talk about! Everyone we met during our test run commented on how unique the item was.  It also can act as a music player – in fact it was a bit like having a private line to Beyonce. She’s just more into singing her side of the conversation than actually chatting about the baby and Jay Z.  Hmm.

At boohoo.com, we love affordable fashion, and whilst some retailers are selling the handsets at high prices, we’re committed to keeping you on trend without breaking the bank, and so present our own version at an unbelievable £20.

Be the envy of all your friends, or give as a Christmas gift, this retro handset is a must have accessory this season!

Girls Interrupted

Fashion and music are the cousins who can’t escape one another. What would GaGa be without the outrageous outfits or Rihanna without her statement makeover following her break-up with Chris Brown, and the two industries share no better ground than the age old formula of the girl band.

From the bubblegum collectives ruling the 1980’s to the modern day reality show groups, girl bands have influenced the style choices of their followers for close to 100 years.  Who can forget Marilyn Monroe’s show-stopping turn as vocalist Sugar Kane in ‘Some Like It Hot’, fronting an all-female jazz orchestra, seducing both audiences and her fellow musicians in barely there beaded ball gowns and kitsch swimwear, and creating a tribe of lookalikes in the process.

Fast forward two decades and The Supremes were climbing the charts, complete with form fitting sequin dresses and modern cropped hairstyles, inspiring women to ditch the rulebook created in the 1950’s and embrace their inner glamazon.

The beauty of the girl band is that they are continuously of their time, ever changing and evolving to keep with or ahead of the trend, and so become the perfect example of fashion icons. Joan Jett’s tight denim and endless eyeliner acted as an antidote to the fluffy, groomed silhouettes of the Charlie’s Angel’s cast, offering an alternative image which many girls could relate to and embraced as their own.

Huge hair and plastic jewellery came with the 1980’s and Bananarama, followed by big personalities and even bigger Buffalo trainers in the form of the Spice Girls and the minimalist androgyny of All Saints.

And now we have…a fractured Girls Aloud and The Saturdays on the brink of fully fledged adulthood, with key member Una Healey expecting a baby girl in the upcoming months. Step forward Little Mix.

Put together from the leftovers of X Factor’s boot camp, the four piece manufactured group are making history by getting further in the talent contest than any other girl band, and with beautifully layered vocal arrangements and fighting spirit their success is no surprise.

Still finding their fashion feet, boohoo.com has been behind the girls since the first show, and we love their urban take on pastel prom dresses and printed playsuits. Jade, far left, wore one of our sleeveless shirts for the group song in week 6.

For your own take on Little Mix’s unique style, pair sequined leggings with a print tee, denim jacket, high-tops and chunky jewellery.

Boohoo Does Twilight With iamfabulicious

Last night I attended the highly anticipated UK Premier of Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1.

Westfield Stratford was practically twinkling with the number of stars in attendance, including  the X- Factor contestants,  Holly Valance, MyAnna Buring, Holly Willoughby, Jamie Campbell Bower and of course,  the stars of the film, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner.

The dress code was ‘Romantic’ and everyone went all out to ensure they looked their Romantic best for the event, and I wasn’t going to be out done!

I rocked the Event in Boohoo.com’s finest clothes!

Boohoo’s Jenny One Shoulder Peplum Bodycon Dress (£25) looked gorgeous, chic and so very stylish over a pair of black tights. (It’s cold out don’t you know!)

Boohoo’s  Tara Suedette Heeled Chelsea Shoe Boots (£25) added a little edginess to the look and were perfect thanks to their chunky heels, creating a look that Kristen Stewart would be proud of and meaning I could totter around for longer before my feet gave in to high heel pain!

(Kristen knows what I mean, wearing a stunning Robert Cavalli gown she removed her skyscraper heels shortly after arriving at premiere, favouring her good old converse trainers whilst signing for fans!)

I bumped into the X Factors Little Mix after the film who approved of my frock! ‘I love your dress!’ said Jesy and Twilight: Breaking Dawn Star MyAnna Buring who was also wearing red  said that she loved of my choice of colour.

I Am Fabulicious is part of Handpicked Media and was Shortlisted in the Cosmopolitan Magazine Blog Awards 2011 in the New Beauty Blog category
